Track Your GPA. Plan Your Future
CBSE Class 10 results show CGPA, not percentage. Here’s the official conversion formula, how to calculate it subject-wise, and what your CGPA means for your next steps.
The Central Board of Secondary Education specifies one official formula for converting Class 10 CGPA to an indicative percentage:
This formula gives an indicative percentage — CBSE explicitly states it is not an exact percentage conversion but rather an indicative equivalent. The percentage on your marksheet may differ slightly from this calculation because it is derived from actual marks while CGPA is a grade-point average.
| CGPA | Indicative Percentage | Performance level |
|---|---|---|
| 10.0 | 95% | Exceptional |
| 9.0 | 85.5% | Excellent |
| 8.0 | 76% | Very Good |
| 7.0 | 66.5% | Good |
| 6.0 | 57% | Average |
| 5.0 | 47.5% | Pass |
| Grade | Grade Point | Marks Range |
|---|---|---|
| A1 | 10 | 91–100 |
| A2 | 9 | 81–90 |
| B1 | 8 | 71–80 |
| B2 | 7 | 61–70 |
| C1 | 6 | 51–60 |
| C2 | 5 | 41–50 |
| D | 4 | 33–40 |
| E1 | — | 21–32 (fail) |
| E2 | — | Below 21 (fail) |
CBSE Class 10 CGPA is calculated as the average of the best 5 subject grade points (out of 6 subjects for most students). This means the lowest-scoring subject may be excluded from the CGPA calculation:
Example: Grades of 9, 8, 8, 7, 6, 5 (6 subjects) → best 5 = 9+8+8+7+6 = 38 → CGPA = 38 ÷ 5 = 7.6
For Class 11 admission at Delhi schools and other CBSE-affiliated schools, CGPA is used directly for stream-based cutoffs. Typical requirements:
Individual school cutoffs vary significantly — check your target school’s admission notice for the current year’s specific CGPA and subject-grade requirements.
Many competitive examinations and entrance tests conducted after Class 10 use the CBSE CGPA for eligibility screening. Here’s how key scenarios work:
Our CBSE Percentage Calculator converts your grade-wise performance directly to the percentage equivalent and checks whether you meet common class 11 stream admission thresholds, saving you the manual calculation across multiple school cutoffs.
It’s worth noting that the CBSE grading system was designed to reduce unhealthy competition over marginal marks differences — a student with 91 and a student with 94 both receive the O grade (10 grade points). This is intentional: it prioritises achievement thresholds over ranking within a grade band. For admissions that require finer differentiation, schools may supplement CGPA with subject-specific grade performance or additional entrance assessments.
Students preparing for Class 11 admission using CBSE CGPA should also familiarise themselves with the specific subject grade requirements — many science programs require a minimum A2 (9 grade points) or A (8 grade points) specifically in Mathematics and Science, regardless of overall CGPA. A student with 8.5 overall CGPA but only B1 (8 grade points) in Mathematics may be ineligible for PCM at cutoff-heavy schools even though their overall CGPA appears strong. Our CBSE Calculator helps you understand your position across both overall CGPA and subject-specific performance.
Academic planning is always more effective when grounded in accurate numbers. Whether you’re calculating what percentage your CGPA represents, checking scholarship eligibility, or preparing application materials, having the right formula and a reliable calculator removes guesswork and lets you focus on what matters most: performing well in the work ahead of you.
