Marks to Percentage — Complete Calculation Guide

Calculating percentage from marks is straightforward — but aggregate percentage, subject-wise percentage, and CGPA conversion each work differently. Here’s everything explained clearly.

Basic Percentage Formula

Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Maximum Marks) × 100

Example: 73 marks out of 100 → (73 ÷ 100) × 100 = 73%

For a paper with different maximum marks: 55 out of 75 → (55 ÷ 75) × 100 = 73.3%

Aggregate Percentage — Multiple Subjects

Aggregate percentage covers all subjects combined. The formula:

Aggregate % = (Total marks obtained across all subjects ÷ Total maximum marks across all subjects) × 100
Subject Marks Obtained Maximum Marks
English 78 100
Maths 82 100
Physics 71 100
Chemistry 67 100
Computer Science 88 100
Total 386 500

Aggregate % = (386 ÷ 500) × 100 = 77.2%

Board Exam Percentage — India-Specific

Different Indian boards calculate aggregate percentage slightly differently:

For University admissions, always check whether the cutoff refers to aggregate percentage (all subjects) or best-of-N percentage (which excludes lowest-scoring subjects). These can differ by several percentage points for the same student.

Percentage vs CGPA — What’s the Difference?

Factor Percentage CGPA
Based on Actual marks out of maximum Grade points on a fixed scale
Range 0–100% 0–4.0 or 0–10.0
Precision High (reflects exact mark) Lower (grade bands group marks)
Credit weighting Simple subject average (usually) Weighted by credit hours
Used by Old-system universities, boards Modern university systems in India/Pakistan

A student with 73% in Maths and 74% in English both get an A grade (8 grade points on the 10-point scale) — so from a CGPA perspective their performance in those subjects is identical, even though their actual marks differ by 1%. This is why CGPA is a coarser measure than percentage but is more standardised across different exam papers and years.

Is 75% equivalent to 8.0 CGPA on a 10-point scale?
Approximately — using the UGC’s 9.5 multiplier formula: 8.0 × 9.5 = 76%. So 75% corresponds to roughly 7.9 CGPA. For Anna University specifically, 8.0 CGPA = (8.0 − 0.5) × 10 = 75%, so yes, 75% is exactly 8.0 CGPA under Anna University’s formula. The exact equivalency depends on your university’s specific formula.
How do I calculate percentage if some subjects are out of 75 and others out of 100?
Use the aggregate formula: add all marks obtained across subjects and divide by the sum of all maximum marks. Example: 55/75 + 72/100 + 41/50 = 168 obtained ÷ 225 total = 74.7%. This correctly accounts for the different maximum marks per subject without needing to convert each to a common scale first.

Percentage Calculation for Merit Lists

Merit lists for university admissions in India — particularly for colleges affiliated with Delhi University, Mumbai University, and similar systems — use specific percentage calculation methods that students should understand precisely:

Always verify which subjects are included in the merit percentage calculation for your specific program — using the wrong subjects can result in calculating a merit percentage that doesn’t match the institution’s official calculation. Program-specific admission notices always specify the exact subjects and weightings used.

One common confusion arises when marks are given in different components with different maxima within the same subject — for example, 18/20 for internal assessment and 56/80 for external examination, totalling 74/100. The subject percentage is simply 74%, not a weighted average of the two component percentages (90% and 70%). Always work from the total marks obtained and total marks possible to calculate percentage — never average the component percentages, as this gives incorrect results when components have different maximum marks. Our Marks to Percentage Calculator handles multi-component subjects correctly.

Academic planning is always more effective when grounded in accurate numbers. Whether you’re calculating what percentage your CGPA represents, checking scholarship eligibility, or preparing application materials, having the right formula and a reliable calculator removes guesswork and lets you focus on what matters most: performing well in the work ahead of you.

Students who proactively understand their own academic metrics — whether that is CGPA, percentage, grade equivalency, or required marks — consistently make better decisions about course selection, study prioritisation, and application strategy. We built CGPA Calcs to put these calculations in every student’s hands, free and without complexity. Use the tools, understand the numbers, and let the data inform your academic plan.
