NUST CGPA Grading System — 2025 Complete Guide
NUST uses a 4.0-scale grading system common to most Pakistani universities. Here’s how it works, what the thresholds mean, and how to calculate your CGPA correctly.

How NUST CGPA Is Calculated
NUST uses the standard credit-weighted GPA formula. Each course is assigned credit hours — typically 3 for most courses and 1–2 for lab courses. The CGPA calculation:
- Multiply each course’s grade point by its credit hours → quality points for that course
- Sum all quality points across all semesters
- Sum all credit hours across all semesters
- CGPA = total quality points ÷ total credit hours

CGPA to Percentage at NUST
NUST does not use an official CGPA-to-percentage conversion formula for the 4.0 scale — percentages are reported directly from course marks. If you need to report a percentage for an application:
- Use your actual percentage marks from individual courses (ask NUST’s registrar for a percentage-based transcript if needed)
- If only CGPA is available, a proportional approximation is: Percentage ≈ CGPA ÷ 4.0 × 100 (very rough — e.g., 3.2/4.0 ≈ 80%)
- Our NUST CGPA Calculator provides conversion estimates — use these for informal purposes only, not official submissions
NUST-Specific CGPA Tips
- Lab courses count: Even 1-credit labs affect your CGPA. An A in lab courses is more easily achievable and contributes meaningfully — don’t neglect them.
- Core vs elective credit weighting: Core courses typically carry more credits and have greater CGPA impact — they deserve more study time.
- Grade replacement policy: At NUST, if you retake a course in which you received an F or a D, the better grade replaces the original in CGPA calculation — but both may appear on the transcript. Confirm current policy with your academic coordinator.
- W (Withdrawal) grade: Dropping a course after the add/drop period may result in a W grade on transcript. W grades typically don’t affect CGPA but do appear on the academic record.
What CGPA do I need for postgraduate studies after NUST?
For NUST’s own MS programs, a minimum CGPA of 2.0/4.0 is typically required for eligibility, but competitive programs have higher effective minimums — 3.0+ is common for funded positions. For international graduate schools (US, UK, Canada), 3.0/4.0 is generally the minimum for serious consideration, with 3.5+ for competitive programs. For HEC-funded scholarships for abroad, 3.0/4.0 is a common threshold.
How does NUST CGPA compare to other Pakistani university CGPAs?
NUST uses rigorous grading, and a 3.0/4.0 CGPA at NUST is generally considered equivalent to or more demanding than a higher CGPA at many other institutions. Employers and graduate schools familiar with Pakistani universities factor in institutional grading difficulty. A transcript from NUST is widely recognised internationally.
NUST CGPA and International Opportunities
NUST graduates are among the most internationally mobile of Pakistani university alumni, and CGPA plays a significant role in international opportunity access:
- US graduate school applications: NUST CGPA on the 4.0 scale is directly comparable to US GPA without complex conversion. A NUST CGPA of 3.0+ is generally competitive for US master’s programs; 3.5+ for funded PhD positions at strong universities.
- HEC scholarships for abroad: HEC’s overseas scholarship programs require a minimum CGPA — check the current HEC advertisement for the specific program you’re targeting, as thresholds vary by scholarship type.
- Erasmus+ and European scholarships: European universities assess NUST CGPA positively due to NUST’s international recognition. A 3.0/4.0 typically represents “good” standing in European equivalency frameworks.
- GRE preparation timeline: If planning for US graduate applications, begin GRE preparation in the 5th or 6th semester to allow time for multiple attempts. Strong GRE scores can partially compensate for CGPA below 3.5 in many programs.
Use our dedicated NUST GPA Calculator to calculate your SGPA and projected CGPA for each semester — it uses NUST’s specific grade boundaries and credit-weighting approach so results match what your registrar’s office computes. If you’re planning your academic trajectory at NUST, pair it with the Target CGPA Planner to calculate what SGPA you need each remaining semester to hit your goal CGPA by graduation.
