SGPA vs CGPA — Key Differences Explained
SGPA and CGPA are related but measure different things. Confusing them leads to poor academic planning decisions. Here’s what each one tells you — and what it doesn’t.
What SGPA Measures
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures your academic performance in a single semester only. Once the semester ends, your SGPA for that semester is fixed — it will never change (unless your university has a grade appeal process). It is calculated using the same formula as CGPA but applied only to the subjects in one semester:
SGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours in that semester)
SGPA is useful for: tracking improvement semester-by-semester, identifying which subjects dragged your performance in a specific term, and calculating what CGPA you’ll need in the next semester to hit a target.
What CGPA Measures
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) accumulates across all semesters. Every semester’s results are incorporated into the running CGPA. Unlike SGPA, CGPA never resets — it carries the weight of every subject you’ve taken since your first semester.
This cumulative nature means: early poor performance is difficult to fully erase, but consistent improvement does gradually shift the CGPA upward, and each new semester adds to the total, diluting the relative weight of older semesters.
How SGPA and CGPA Interact
| Scenario |
Effect on CGPA |
| SGPA > current CGPA |
CGPA increases |
| SGPA = current CGPA |
CGPA stays the same |
| SGPA < current CGPA |
CGPA decreases |
| SGPA much higher than CGPA (early semester) |
Significant CGPA increase |
| SGPA much higher than CGPA (final semester) |
Small CGPA increase (cumulative weight dilutes impact) |
The key insight: the impact of a single semester’s SGPA on your CGPA decreases as you progress through your program. In semester 2, your SGPA has enormous weight. In semester 7 of an 8-semester program, even a perfect SGPA moves the CGPA only slightly.
Using Both for Academic Planning
- Use SGPA for short-term feedback: Your SGPA at the end of each semester tells you whether your study approach is working. Two consecutive semesters of improving SGPA indicate an upward trajectory even if CGPA hasn’t visibly moved yet.
- Use CGPA for long-term targets: Employment cutoffs, scholarship thresholds, and graduation classification are all based on CGPA — not SGPA. Keep your long-term CGPA target in view.
- Plan required SGPA mathematically: Use our Target CGPA Planner to calculate the exact SGPA you need each remaining semester to reach your CGPA goal. This turns an abstract target into a concrete each-semester plan.
SGPA to CGPA Calculation
If your university provides only semester-wise SGPA (not cumulative CGPA directly), you can calculate your own CGPA:
CGPA = Σ (SGPA × Credits in that semester) ÷ Σ (Total credits across all semesters)

Can CGPA be higher than my best SGPA?
No — your CGPA is always a weighted average of your SGPAs. It will always fall between your worst-ever SGPA and your best-ever SGPA. If your CGPA appears higher than your most recent SGPA, it means your earlier semesters were stronger, pulling the cumulative average above the recent semester’s result.
Which is more important for campus placements — SGPA or CGPA?
CGPA — almost universally. Campus placement shortlisting is based on cumulative CGPA at the time of the placement drive. SGPA may be examined to see if there’s a recent improvement trend, but the primary filter is CGPA. Some companies look at the most recent 2–4 semester SGPAs alongside overall CGPA as a way to identify improving candidates, but the headline number is always CGPA.
Common Mistakes Students Make with SGPA and CGPA
Understanding the difference between SGPA and CGPA prevents several common planning errors:
- Confusing a high SGPA for a recovered CGPA: One excellent semester raises your CGPA slightly — it does not reset it. Students who score a 9.0 SGPA after several semesters of 6.5 are often surprised that their CGPA is still around 7.0. The math is correct — cumulative averaging dilutes the impact of any single semester.
- Ignoring CGPA during a good semester: Students who are performing well in a given semester sometimes don’t check how much that SGPA is actually moving their CGPA. Tracking this mid-semester using projected grades helps maintain awareness of where the cumulative number will land.
- Treating SGPA as comparable across semesters without considering credits: A 7.5 SGPA in a semester with 15 credits contributes less to CGPA than a 7.5 SGPA in a semester with 22 credits. Credit hours matter, not just grade points.
- Not knowing the CGPA calculation for their university: Some universities compute SGPA with a slightly different rounding approach, and the cumulative CGPA may not simply be the average of the individual SGPAs. Always use your university’s official formula or a verified calculator.
Our SGPA to CGPA Calculator handles all of this automatically — enter your semester-wise SGPA and credits and it produces the accurate cumulative CGPA using the correct weighted formula. This is particularly useful when your university’s student portal only shows SGPA per semester and you need to compute the cumulative figure yourself.
