VTU Grading Scale (Current)

Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Karnataka, uses a 10-point grading scale for all affiliated engineering colleges. The current scale (applicable to most students under Regulation 2018 and 2021):

Grade Grade Point Marks Range Classification
O 10 90–100 Outstanding
A+ 9 80–89 Excellent
A 8 70–79 Very Good
B+ 7 60–69 Good
B 6 55–59 Above Average
C 5 50–54 Average
P 4 45–49 Pass
F 0 Below 45 Fail

VTU CGPA Formula

VTU uses the standard credit-weighted formula:

CGPA = Σ (Ci × GPi) ÷ Σ Ci

Where Ci = credits for subject i and GPi = grade point for subject i, summed across all semesters. Credits at VTU range from 1 (for labs/workshops) to 4 (for core theory courses). VTU’s scheme of examination specifies the credit allocation for each subject in each semester — check the scheme for your batch year.

VTU CGPA to Percentage Conversion

VTU specifies its official percentage conversion formula:

Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10
CGPA Percentage Class
9.25 85% Distinction
8.25 75% First Class
6.75 60% Second Class
5.75 50% Pass
⚠️ The (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 formula applies specifically to VTU’s 10-point scale under current regulations. Do not use this formula for Anna University or other universities — each has its own conversion formula.

Regulation Differences (2015 vs 2018 vs 2021)

Regulation Grade system Passing marks CGPA formula
Before 2015 Percentage-based (no CGPA) 40% theory, 40% practicals N/A
2015 10-point CGPA introduced 40% (35% in some courses) Standard credit-weighted
2018 10-point, revised scheme 40% theory + 40% IA minimum Standard credit-weighted
2021 10-point, OBE framework 40% in each component Standard credit-weighted

Students under pre-2015 regulations have percentage-based transcripts and need to use the percentage directly — CGPA conversion does not apply to them. Students under 2015+ regulations should use the credit-weighted formula above.

VTU CGPA and Employment

VTU is one of India’s largest technical universities with over 200 affiliated engineering colleges. Placement patterns for VTU students:

What is a good CGPA at VTU?
8.0+ is considered excellent at VTU and opens doors to top recruiters and GATE coaching success. 7.0–7.9 is good and meets most employer cutoffs. 6.0–6.9 is satisfactory and qualifies for mass recruiters in IT. Below 6.0 is challenging for campus placements at larger companies but doesn’t prevent obtaining a degree or pursuing higher studies if you perform well in entrance examinations.
How do I check my CGPA on the VTU website?
VTU results and CGPA are available on results.vtu.ac.in. Log in with your university seat number to access semester-wise results and cumulative CGPA. Note that CGPA on the VTU portal is calculated at the end of each semester — our VTU Calculator lets you cross-check the calculation and convert to percentage.

VTU CGPA Improvement Strategies

VTU’s semester examination system has specific characteristics that affect how students can improve their CGPA effectively:

Our VTU CGPA Calculator applies the official VTU formula — (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 — for percentage conversion and the standard credit-weighted formula for CGPA calculation. Use it to cross-check your official portal results and to plan what SGPA you need in remaining semesters to reach your target CGPA by graduation.

One aspect of VTU’s system that students often overlook is the mandatory minimum in each component. VTU requires separate passing marks in internal assessment (IA) and the university examination — it is not sufficient to average well overall if one component is below the minimum. A student with 38/50 IA marks and 65/100 theory marks passes, but a student with 18/50 IA marks and 90/100 theory marks may still fail because the IA minimum is not met. Always check the component-wise passing requirements in your regulation’s examination scheme before assuming overall marks alone determine the result.
