The Conversion Formula Explained

Our calculator uses the most widely accepted standard formula recognised by universities worldwide

4.0 GPA = CGPA × 0.4 (÷ 10 × 4)

This is mathematically identical to (CGPA / 10) × 4 — simply scaling a 10-point score to a 4-point scale.

9.0 CGPA → 3.60 GPA
8.0 CGPA → 3.20 GPA
7.5 CGPA → 3.00 GPA
6.5 CGPA → 2.60 GPA

How to Use This Calculator

Convert your CGPA to GPA in under 30 seconds — no account, no ads, no fees

2

Enter the Value Above

Type your CGPA (for example: 7.83 or 9.1) into the input field. You can enter up to two decimal places for maximum accuracy.

3

Choose Your Rounding Preference

Most US universities want GPA reported to 2 decimal places. Some forms only accept one decimal. Pick whichever matches the application form you are filling out.

4

Copy the Result to Your Application

The calculated GPA is ready to paste into your university application, scholarship form, or resume. Always note the source — "converted from 10-point CGPA using ÷10×4 formula" — in case the admissions team asks.

What Is CGPA and Why Do International Universities Want a 4.0 GPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a grading standard used across most Indian universities, Pakistan's HEC-affiliated universities, and several other South Asian institutions. The scale runs from 0 to 10, where 10 represents a perfect score.

In contrast, universities in the United States, Canada, Australia, and much of Europe use a 4.0 GPA scale. When you apply to a graduate program or undergraduate transfer at these universities, their admissions systems are built around the 4.0 range. An admissions officer who sees "8.7 / 10" may not immediately grasp how competitive that score is — but "3.48 / 4.0" communicates the same performance in a format they immediately understand.

This is why converting your CGPA to GPA is not optional — it is a practical necessity for any international application.

The Standard CGPA to 4.0 GPA Formula

The most widely used formula is simple proportional scaling:

GPA (4.0 scale) = (CGPA / 10) × 4
This simplifies to: GPA = CGPA × 0.4

The logic is straightforward — you are scaling your score from a denominator of 10 to a denominator of 4. A student with an 8.0 CGPA is at the 80th percentile of the 10-point scale, so they should be at the 80th percentile of the 4.0 scale, which equals 3.20.

Is This Formula Accepted by All Universities?

The formula above is the general standard and is accepted by most universities as a guideline. However, some institutions have specific requirements:

  • WES (World Education Services) — Used for Canadian immigration and many US universities. They do their own evaluation and may produce a slightly different GPA based on your full transcript.
  • Top US Universities (Ivy League, MIT, Stanford) — They typically ask you to enter your CGPA on their original scale and note the max. Their internal evaluators handle the conversion themselves.
  • UK Universities — Mostly map your CGPA to their Degree Classification system (First, 2:1, 2:2) rather than asking for a 4.0 GPA directly.
  • German Universities (DAAD) — Use their own modified Bavarian Formula which may give a different result than the standard ×0.4 method.

Our calculator gives you the standard conversion — always confirm with the specific university or scholarship program before submitting.

Which Indian University Grading Scales Work With This Calculator?

This converter is designed for the standard 10-point CGPA system. It works directly for graduates and students from the following universities and boards:

  • All IITs and NITs (which pioneered the 10-point CGPA system in India)
  • Anna University and its affiliated colleges in Tamil Nadu
  • VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University) in Karnataka
  • Mumbai University and affiliated colleges
  • Delhi University (DU) — undergraduate programmes using CGPA
  • Pune University (SPPU)
  • JNTU, Osmania University, Andhra University
  • Most private universities following the UGC grading framework (SGPA/CGPA on 10-point scale)

If your university uses a 7-point scale or 5-point scale, you will need to first normalize your score to a 10-point equivalent before using this calculator. Your university's academic section can provide the conversion factor.

How to Report Your GPA on US University Applications (Common App, Coalition App, GRE)

When filling out the Common App for US undergraduate admissions, there is a field for "GPA Scale" where you select your scale. You can either enter your original CGPA on a 10-point scale or convert it and enter the 4.0 equivalent — both are accepted. Most advisors recommend entering the original score alongside the max scale, as admissions officers at top schools are familiar with Indian grading.

For graduate school applications (via universities' own portals), the form usually asks for cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale. In this case, use the converted value from our calculator and mention in your Statement of Purpose that your institution uses a 10-point CGPA system.

For the GRE score report, ETS does not require GPA — that information goes directly on the university application form.

Does a Low CGPA Mean Rejection? What GPA Do You Need?

The minimum GPA requirement varies by program and university. Here is a general guide:

  • Top US MS programs (MIT, Stanford, CMU, Berkeley) — Typical admitted student CGPA: 8.5–9.5 (3.40–3.80 GPA). Competitive but not the only factor.
  • Good US universities (mid-tier) — Generally 7.0–8.0 CGPA (2.80–3.20 GPA) is competitive with strong GRE and LORs.
  • Canadian universities (Toronto, UBC, McGill) — Usually require minimum 75–80% average, roughly equivalent to 7.5–8.0 CGPA.
  • Scholarships (Fulbright, DAAD, Commonwealth) — Typically 3.0 GPA (7.5 CGPA) and above as a minimum, but competition requires higher.
Tip: A lower CGPA is often compensated by a strong GRE/GMAT score, excellent letters of recommendation, research experience, publications, or internships at reputed organisations. Holistic review is real.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the most common questions students ask before and after using our converter — answered clearly and honestly.

Does every university accept the ×0.4 formula?+
Most universities accept it as a self-reported estimate. However, institutions that require credential evaluation (like Canadian immigration or WES-required programs) will do their own assessment using your full transcript. Use our result as a reference — always confirm with the specific program's admissions page.
My university uses SGPA, not CGPA — can I still use this?+
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is per-semester, while CGPA is cumulative. To use this tool, calculate your overall CGPA first — either from your official transcript or by using a weighted average of all SGPAs across semesters. Then enter that CGPA here.
Is 7.5 CGPA good enough for a US MS program?+
A 7.5 CGPA converts to a 3.0 GPA, which meets the minimum cutoff for most mid-range to good US universities. For top programs, a 7.5 is on the lower side and you would need to compensate with a strong GRE score (320+), research experience, and stellar recommendations. It does not close doors — it just means the rest of your profile needs to be stronger.
What is the difference between CGPA and percentage, and which do I report?+
CGPA is grade-point based, while percentage is marks-based. They are not directly interchangeable, though a rough approximation is CGPA × 9.5 = Percentage (per CBSE guidelines). International applications typically ask for GPA on a 4.0 scale — not percentage. Use this calculator to get the 4.0 equivalent of your CGPA.
Do I need WES evaluation or is this calculator sufficient?+
For most direct-admission university applications, this calculator is sufficient to fill in the GPA field on your application form. WES (World Education Services) evaluation is a formal credential review required by specific programs — mostly Canadian immigration (Express Entry), some US grad programs that explicitly ask for it, and professional licensing bodies. Check if your target program specifically requires WES. If not, our calculator result is generally acceptable.
Why does my converted GPA look lower than classmates who studied abroad?+
Grading cultures differ. Many Indian universities grade strictly — a 9.0 CGPA from an IIT is considered outstanding. In some US universities, grade inflation means an 8.0 GPA equivalent might be more common. Admissions committees at competitive universities are aware of this difference and evaluate Indian CGPAs in context. A 3.40 GPA from an IIT carries different weight than a 3.40 GPA from an average US state university.
