Convert your CBSE CGPA or subject grade point into percentage in seconds. Use the standard 9.5 multiplier, check examples, understand when conversion is only indicative, and copy the result for school, scholarship, admission or application forms.
Enter your CGPA, choose the calculation type, and get a clean percentage result. The calculator uses the CBSE 9.5 rule by default and also lets you adjust rounding for forms that require one or two decimal places.
For most CBSE CGPA conversions, use 9.5 as the multiplier. Use your official marksheet percentage wherever the marksheet already provides marks or percentage.
The widely used CBSE conversion rule is simple: multiply the CGPA by 9.5. This gives an indicative percentage, not a new official mark, so it should be used carefully in forms.
The standard formula is used when a CBSE result is shown in CGPA or grade points and a school, portal or application asks for a percentage. It is most commonly associated with CBSE Class 10 grading under the earlier CCE-style report card format. The formula is:
For subject-wise conversion, the same idea is used with the subject grade point:
If your CBSE CGPA is 8.6, the indicative percentage is 8.6 × 9.5 = 81.7%. If your Mathematics grade point is 9, the indicative subject percentage is 9 × 9.5 = 85.5%.
The 9.5 multiplier became popular because CBSE described it as an indicative equivalence between grade point and percentage of marks. In simple language, a 10 grade point does not become 100%; it becomes 95% under this formula. That is why 9.0 CGPA converts to 85.5%, 8.0 CGPA converts to 76%, and 7.0 CGPA converts to 66.5%.
The converted percentage is best treated as an indicative percentage. If your CBSE marksheet already provides subject marks, total marks, grades or an official percentage, use the marksheet values first. Use this calculator when the document only gives CGPA, when an old mark statement requires conversion, or when a portal asks you to enter percentage based on CGPA.
For Class 10, many students search for “CBSE CGPA to percentage” because older Class 10 performance statements used CGPA. For Class 12, students often receive marks subject-wise, so direct percentage from marks is usually clearer. If your Class 12 document or institution gives only a grade-point equivalent, this calculator can provide an estimate, but your university or board instruction should be followed for final reporting.
Use this guide to avoid common mistakes while converting CGPA into percentage for admission forms, scholarship portals, school transfers and profile building.
Overall CGPA is usually the average of main subject grade points. When a CBSE document states the CGPA, multiply that final value by 9.5. For example, 9.4 CGPA equals 89.3% and 7.6 CGPA equals 72.2%.
If a school asks for subject-wise indicative percentage, multiply the subject grade point by 9.5. This is useful for stream selection, internal merit lists and subject eligibility checks.
If a form allows both CGPA and percentage, enter the original CGPA in the CGPA field and the converted percentage in the percentage field. If there is a remarks field, write “converted using CBSE 9.5 formula.”
The 9.5 rule is a CBSE-style conversion. Universities, IITs, NITs, state boards and private institutions may use different formulas. For a different scale, use our scale converter.
| CBSE CGPA | Formula | Indicative Percentage | Common Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10.0 | 10.0 × 9.5 | 95.0% | Top grade-point estimate |
| 9.8 | 9.8 × 9.5 | 93.1% | Scholarship and merit profile |
| 9.5 | 9.5 × 9.5 | 90.25% | High distinction estimate |
| 9.0 | 9.0 × 9.5 | 85.5% | Admission eligibility check |
| 8.5 | 8.5 × 9.5 | 80.75% | College form percentage |
| 8.2 | 8.2 × 9.5 | 77.9% | Most searched example |
| 8.0 | 8.0 × 9.5 | 76.0% | General academic profile |
| 7.6 | 7.6 × 9.5 | 72.2% | Common application estimate |
| 7.0 | 7.0 × 9.5 | 66.5% | Eligibility comparison |
| 6.0 | 6.0 × 9.5 | 57.0% | Minimum-form estimate |
If your result gives only subject grade points, first add the grade points of the main subjects and divide by the number of subjects included in the CGPA. Many CBSE examples exclude the additional sixth subject while calculating the overall CGPA, but your own statement or school instruction should be followed.
Suppose five subject grade points are 9, 8, 10, 8 and 9. Add them: 9 + 8 + 10 + 8 + 9 = 44. Divide by 5: 44 ÷ 5 = 8.8 CGPA. Convert to percentage: 8.8 × 9.5 = 83.6%.
Do not mix a percentage-based marksheet and a CGPA-based marksheet. If you have actual marks, calculate percentage from marks. If you have only CGPA or grade points, use the 9.5 conversion. This small difference matters because admission portals sometimes compare students from different boards using different formats.
Most conversion errors happen because students treat CGPA, percentage, marks and GPA as the same thing. They are connected, but they are not interchangeable. A percentage describes marks out of 100, CGPA describes grade-point performance on a scale, and GPA usually refers to a different academic scale used by many international universities. When you fill a form, first identify the exact field: “percentage,” “CGPA,” “marks obtained,” “grade point,” or “GPA.” Then enter the value that matches that field.
Under the CBSE 9.5 formula, 10 CGPA converts to 95%, not 100%. This matters for scholarship filters, admission cutoffs and school merit lists. If a student writes 100% without a basis, the value may not match the uploaded marksheet. Use the conversion table above to check common CGPA values before submitting any application.
The 9.5 multiplier is widely used for CBSE-style conversion, but many universities publish their own CGPA-to-percentage formulas. Some multiply by 10, some use a fixed deduction, some provide a transcript conversion certificate, and some do not allow conversion at all. If you are converting college CGPA, engineering CGPA, DU CGPA, VTU CGPA or another university score, use that institution’s formula instead of blindly applying the CBSE rule.
Rounding can change eligibility in close cases. For example, 9.4 CGPA is 89.3%, not 90%. If a form accepts decimals, enter the exact converted value. If it accepts only whole numbers, read the form instructions carefully. Some portals round normally, some ask for nearest integer, and some expect the exact percentage up to two decimal places.
A subject grade point conversion is not the same as overall CGPA conversion. If your Science grade point is 10, the subject indicative percentage is 95%. That does not automatically mean your overall percentage is 95%. Overall percentage depends on the overall CGPA or actual marks across the included subjects.
Before submitting a form, compare the value with your original result document. If the document shows marks, use marks. If it shows grades and CGPA only, use the converted value. If the school issues a separate conversion certificate, attach or quote that certificate. This avoids confusion when your application is verified later.
Keep three values in your records: the original CGPA or grade point exactly as printed, the converted percentage using the 9.5 formula, and a note explaining the conversion. For example: “CBSE CGPA 8.8; indicative percentage 83.6%; calculated as 8.8 × 9.5.” This format is clear, honest and easy for schools, colleges and admission teams to verify.

The commonly used CBSE formula is Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, 8.4 CGPA becomes 79.8%. This gives an indicative percentage equivalent and is useful when an old CBSE result, school form or admission portal asks for a percentage from CGPA.
The 9.5 multiplier is the widely cited CBSE CGPA conversion method, especially for older Class 10 CGPA-based results. However, if your current marksheet already shows marks, subject grades or an official percentage, use the marksheet information first. For high-stakes admissions, follow the instruction written by the school, board, university or application portal.
Using the CBSE 9.5 rule, 10 CGPA equals 95%. It is not treated as 100% under this formula. This is one of the most common mistakes students make while filling forms, so always write 95% if you are specifically using CGPA × 9.5.
8.2 CGPA in CBSE percentage is 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. You can copy this as 77.9% or round it to 78% only if the form asks for whole-number percentage. If decimal values are allowed, keeping one or two decimals is better.
9.4 CGPA converts to 89.3% using 9.4 × 9.5. If an eligibility cutoff is 90%, do not round 89.3 up to 90 unless the institution clearly allows rounding. Admission decisions usually depend on exact criteria, so accuracy matters.
Yes, for an indicative subject-wise percentage, multiply the subject grade point by 9.5. For example, a grade point of 9 in Science gives 85.5%. This is useful for stream allocation or school-level merit comparison, but it should not replace official marks if marks are already printed on the marksheet.
CGPA is generally the average of grade points in the main subjects included in the scheme. Add the included subject grade points and divide by the number of included subjects. If a sixth additional subject appears on the statement, check whether it is excluded from the official CGPA calculation before converting the result into percentage.
Class 12 students should first use actual marks if the marksheet provides marks. Calculate percentage as obtained marks divided by maximum marks multiplied by 100. Use CGPA × 9.5 only when your document or institution asks you to convert a CBSE-style grade point or CGPA into an indicative percentage.
Many Indian school and college forms accept the CBSE-style converted percentage when a CGPA-based result is provided. Still, every institution can set its own reporting rules. Keep your original CBSE mark statement ready and mention the conversion method when a form gives space for notes.
You can use it for quick conversion, but CUET and university admission portals may ask for Class 12 marks, percentage, category-specific eligibility or subject-specific scores. Always use the official value required by the portal. This calculator is a helper, not a replacement for admission instructions.
If the form asks for percentage, write the converted percentage. If it asks for marks obtained and maximum marks, check whether the portal has a CGPA option or instructions for grade-based results. Avoid inventing marks from CGPA unless the institution clearly tells you how to do it.
No. CBSE percentage and U.S.-style 4.0 GPA are different reporting systems. If you are applying abroad, enter your original CBSE score wherever possible and follow the university’s conversion or credential-evaluation requirement. For a quick estimate, use a separate CGPA to GPA converter rather than treating percentage as GPA.
